Northern Europe → Türkiye · ferrous scrap
Charter a vessel for scrap from Northern Europe to Türkiye.
For ferrous scrap loading in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany or the UK for Turkish steel mills. CharterDeck's AI checks your grade mix against each handysize and supramax on cubic, draft and the mill's berth, weighs the ballast and what the load port adds in EU ETS cost, and ranks the ships on the whole voyage; your broker then negotiates the fixture.
- Türkiye buys the most
- Türkiye is the largest single buyer of the EU's ferrous scrap.
- Cubic before deadweight
- Light grades fill the holds before the ship is down to her marks.
- The load port moves the cost
- An EU load port brings the EU ETS into the voyage; a UK-only loading does not.
How AI matches a scrap stem from Northern Europe to Türkiye
Scrap stows light for its weight, and the Turkish mill's berth governs the discharge. CharterDeck's AI checks the points that make or break a scrap fixture before your broker goes to owners:
- Works out whether each ship's cubic takes your grade mix at its stowage factor, not only her deadweight
- Ranks the handysizes and supramaxes by their ballast to your load port and whether they make your laycan
- Checks draft and size against the Turkish mill berth you nominate
- Flags when you need a geared ship because the berth has no shore cranes
- Prices the voyage with the EU ETS share when the load port is in the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany
- Ranks the candidates on fit and on the cost of the whole voyage, with the reasons shown
Scrap moving from Northern Europe to Türkiye
Türkiye imports ferrous scrap by sea for its steel mills and is the EU's largest single buyer. In January to May 2026 it imported 8.08 million tonnes of scrap; the Netherlands supplied 1.07 million, the UK about 0.94 million, Belgium about 0.54 million and Germany about 0.24 million, according to Turkish statistics. The cargoes on the route:
- Ferrous scrap in bulk (heavy melting scrap, shredded and bundles) from Dutch, Belgian, German and UK ports
- Cargoes for Turkish steel mills, whose berths differ in equipment, draft and discharge rate
- An open trade for EU exporters: Türkiye, an OECD member, is outside the EU's proposed limits on scrap exports to non-OECD countries from May 2027
Which ships fit a scrap stem to Türkiye
Deep-sea scrap usually goes on handysize or supramax bulk carriers with large, box-shaped holds; the grade mix and its stowage factor decide how much each ship can load:
| Ship | When it fits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Handysize | Smaller stems, and mill berths with tighter limits | Cubic for light grades; draft at the mill berth |
| Supramax / ultramax | Larger stems where the mill berth takes her | Whether the grade mix fills her cubic |

Send your cargoWhat changes the voyage economics
- The grade mix and its stowage factor: light scrap fills the holds before the ship reaches her deadweight
- The load port: from the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany half the voyage's emissions fall under the EU ETS; a ship loading only in the UK and sailing straight to Türkiye is outside it
- More than one load port, when the stem is built up in several places, adds port time and deviation
- Ballast to the UK or the Continent from where the ship opens
- The voyage through Gibraltar into the Mediterranean, where bunkers weigh more than on a short-sea run
- The Turkish mill berth: its equipment, draft and discharge rate
- Laytime and demurrage terms at discharge
- EU policy: in its March 2025 steel and metals action plan the European Commission said it would examine whether export fees or duties are needed to keep more scrap in the EU
What your broker does on a scrap fixture to Türkiye
The AI narrows the ships; the fixture itself is negotiated and managed by your broker:
- Confirms the grade mix, how it stows and the mill's berth with the owner
- Negotiates freight, loading and discharge terms, laytime and demurrage
- Coordinates the load ports when the stem is built up in more than one
- Works with the Turkish mill and its agents from our Istanbul desk
- Follows the ship through to discharge at the mill

- Whether the cargo includes turnings or borings
Questions, answered
- Which ships carry scrap from Northern Europe to Türkiye?
- Usually handysizes and supramaxes with large, box-shaped holds. The grade mix sets the stowage factor and with it how much a ship can load; the mill's berth decides the size.
- Does the EU ETS apply to a scrap cargo to Türkiye?
- It depends on the load port. From a port in the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany half the voyage's emissions fall under the EU ETS and the owner prices that in; a ship loading only in the UK and sailing straight to Türkiye is outside it.
- Will EU limits on scrap exports stop cargoes to Türkiye?
- Not under the current proposal: the EU plans to limit scrap exports to countries outside the OECD from May 2027, and Türkiye is an OECD member. The rules are still being finalised, and we follow them as they change.
- Can the ship load in more than one port?
- Yes, if the owner agrees. Every extra load port adds port time and deviation, so we compare the options on the whole voyage before you choose.
